Ojo Local Government Launches ‘Adopt a School for Snacks for Thought – PBAT FEEDS!’ Initiative to Boost Learning Through Child Nutrition
In a landmark effort to improve child nutrition and strengthen learning outcomes in public primary schools, the Executive Chairman of Ojo Local Government, Hon. (Princess) Muhibat Titilola Rufai, has officially flagged off the “Adopt a School for Snacks for Thought – PBAT FEEDS!” initiative, a pilot programme designed to ensure that pupils learn in a healthy and supportive environment.
The programme, which commenced at the Chairman’s alma mater, St. Michael Nursery and Primary School 2, aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and reflects the shared commitment of the Federal, Lagos State, and Local Governments to improving the welfare and educational development of Nigerian children.
Speaking at the launch, Hon. Rufai described the initiative as a historic milestone for Ojo Local Government and Lagos State, emphasizing that quality education begins with proper nutrition.
According to the Chairman, the programme is more than the distribution of snacks; it is an investment in the future of children. She explained that the initiative is expected to improve classroom concentration, increase school attendance, reduce dropout rates, enhance academic performance, and address the challenge of hidden hunger among school-age children.
Hon. Rufai announced that the pilot phase of the programme will run for three days, from Tuesday, June 30 to Thursday, July 2, 2026, during which pupils in selected public primary schools across Ojo Local Government will receive nutritious snacks and beverages daily.
She commended the Department of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) and the Education Department for their dedication and coordination in bringing the initiative to life. She also charged head teachers to ensure the transparent and orderly distribution of the food items, while calling on Ward Apex Leaders and political appointees to monitor the programme and ensure that every eligible child benefits.
The Chairman further appreciated parents and guardians for their continued partnership with schools in nurturing the children, noting that the initiative is designed to complement, rather than replace, parental support.
Recognizing the importance of collective responsibility, Hon. Rufai called on corporate organizations, development partners, private sector stakeholders, philanthropists, and well-meaning Nigerians to embrace the “Adopt a School” concept and support the sustainability of the programme beyond its pilot phase.
Representing the Lagos State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Professor Babajide Abidogun described the initiative as a transparent and accountable platform that enables individuals, businesses, foundations, and development partners to directly support public primary schools with nutritious snacks.
He noted that even a modest contribution of less than $1.50 can help feed a child, improve learning outcomes, and provide hope for a brighter future. He stressed that government alone cannot meet every need and urged all stakeholders to work together in investing in Nigeria’s greatest asset its children.
Professor Abidogun further stated that strengthening children’s knowledge through proper nutrition is essential to building the human capital required for national development.
The flag-off ceremony attracted top government officials, party leaders, education stakeholders, and community representatives, including Apex Leader Alhaji R. O. Olorunfunmi; APC Leader Alhaji Adamson Shitta; Vice Chairman Hon. Chimezie Emerem; Secretary to the Local Government, Mr. Yekini Yayah; Council Manager Mr. Muyiwa Ayeni; Representative of the Lagos State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Professor Babajide Abidogun; Supervisor for Education, Mrs. George Sherifat Idowu; Supervisor for Special Duties, Hon.
