Ojo Local Government Organizes Measles–Rubella Vaccination Training for Health Workers
The Executive Chairman of Ojo Local Government, **Hon. Muhibat Titiola Rufai**, has organized a comprehensive training programme for health workers on the Measles and Rubella (MR) vaccine. The training held on **Thursday, 22 January 2026**, at the **Ojo Local Government Council Secretariat**, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen public health delivery and disease prevention at the grassroots.
During the programme, the **Chief Nursing Officer, Mrs. Oliver Oyekanmi**, provided detailed education on Measles and Rubella. She explained that **measles** is a highly contagious and potentially deadly disease caused by the measles virus, which spreads easily through coughing, sneezing, or even talking. She further described **rubella**, also known as German measles, as a contagious viral disease that often presents as a milder form of measles.
Mrs. Oyekanmi noted that the **Measles–Rubella (MR) vaccine** is targeted at children **from 9 months to 14 years of age**, stressing the importance of adherence to vaccination guidelines to ensure effectiveness and safety.
She also emphasized critical precautions that health workers must observe before administering the vaccine. According to her, **children with high temperature, persistent cough, runny nose, or those in a feverish condition should not be vaccinated** at that time. In addition, she stated that **no child should be vaccinated without the consent of their parents or guardians**, underscoring ethical and professional standards in healthcare delivery.
As part of the training, health workers were also guided on **strategic locations for vaccination outreach**, including **schools, churches, and mosques**, to ensure wide coverage and accessibility within the community.
In her closing remarks, Mrs. Oyekanmi reassured participants of the **safety and effectiveness of the Measles–Rubella vaccine**, stating that it is **WHO-prequalified and certified by NAFDAC**. She added that the vaccine has been in use **globally since 1979**, with proven success in preventing measles and rubella worldwide. She encouraged health workers to carry out their duties with confidence, professionalism, and commitment to safeguarding the health of children across Ojo Local Government.
