Ojo Local Government Sensitizes Residents Ahead of Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise Resuming April 25, 2026

The Executive Chairman of Ojo Local Government Hon. Princess Muhibat Titilola Rufai has called on residents and stakeholders to take collective responsibility for environmental cleanliness as the monthly sanitation exercise resumes on Saturday, April 25, 2026.

Addressing participants at a sensitization meeting, the Chairman appreciated attendees for their presence and stressed the importance of joint action in maintaining a healthy environment. She noted that the reintroduction of the exercise by the Lagos State Government marks a return to a proven initiative that once helped keep the state clean.

The Chairman explained that the sanitation exercise will hold on the last Saturday of every month between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., emphasizing that it is not a full-day restriction. Residents are expected to use the two-hour period to clean their surroundings, including clearing gutters, sweeping roadsides, and properly bagging waste for collection. Normal activities will resume immediately after 8:30 a.m.

She further clarified that while there will be no total movement lockdown, residents must actively participate in the exercise. Those found engaging in other activities instead of cleaning may be questioned by enforcement teams.

The Chairman assured residents of government support, stating that LAWMA trucks will be deployed to collect waste during the exercise. She urged residents to properly bag and place their refuse for collection and avoid dumping waste in drainage channels.

Highlighting the importance of the exercise, she explained that blocked drainage systems contribute to flooding and increase the risk of diseases such as cholera, malaria, and typhoid. She noted that the initiative is aimed at preventing flooding, improving public health, reducing waste management costs, and promoting a cleaner environment.

She also urged residents, community development associations, and market stakeholders to take ownership of their environment, stressing that the government cannot clean every street alone. She encouraged everyone to lead by example and commit just two hours monthly to sanitation efforts.

In his remarks, the Head of Department of Environment, SAN Agannanoh Matthew, stated that the reintroduction of the sanitation exercise aligns with existing environmental laws and reinforces civic responsibility among residents. He noted that while participation remains voluntary, it is strongly encouraged due to its benefits for public health and environmental awareness.

He outlined key activities expected of residents during the exercise, including clearing gutters and drainage blockages, proper bagging and disposal of waste, and avoiding indiscriminate dumping of refuse. He also made himself accessible to residents for emergencies and commended the Executive Chairman for her support toward the success of the initiative.

Stakeholders at the meeting, including community leaders, were tasked with mobilizing residents and promoting adherence to sanitation guidelines. The CDC Chairman also reinforced the need for grassroots participation to ensure the success of the exercise.
