Ojo Local Government, Lagos State Government Strengthen Support for Mothers and Children at 6th MICHD Programme

 

The programme brought together pregnant women, nursing mothers, healthcare professionals and government representatives to promote healthy pregnancies, safe childbirth and proper care for mothers and children.

Welcoming participants to the event, the Executive Chairman of Ojo Local Government, Hon. (Princess) Muhibat Titilola Rufai, encouraged pregnant women to pay close attention to their health, attend regular medical check-ups and seek professional care whenever necessary.

The Chairman reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to supporting programmes that improve the health and welfare of women and children across Ojo Local Government. She also expressed appreciation to the Lagos State Government for the initiative and urged residents to ensure they have their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in order to participate in the forthcoming elections.

Representing the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Dr. Omotayo Babatunde, Director of Citizen Engagement, expressed appreciation for the programme and described the sixth edition of MICHD as an important intervention for mothers and children.

He explained that the programme is part of the Lagos State Government’s Womb-to-School initiative, which provides support for pregnant women and nursing mothers, promotes good nutrition and healthy practices, strengthens community participation and improves access to healthcare services.

Speaking to the participants, Dr. Ahmad Bello Amina, Director of Medical Services and Disease Control, Lagos State Health District 5, stressed the importance of regular antenatal care throughout pregnancy.

She advised expectant mothers to know their expected delivery dates, prepare adequately for childbirth and seek immediate medical attention when they experience unusual symptoms or warning signs. She also cautioned against self-medication and encouraged pregnant women to consult qualified healthcare professionals before taking medication.

Dr. Amina further informed participants about various government programmes available to support residents, including healthcare services, women empowerment initiatives, poverty reduction programmes, skills acquisition opportunities and other forms of assistance. She also highlighted the Eko Care Scheme and related support programmes available to residents through Lagos State.

The event provided an opportunity for pregnant women and nursing mothers to receive useful information on maternal and child health while also learning about government support programmes available to them.

Among those present were the Executive Chairman of Ojo Local Government, members of the Executive and Legislative arms of the Council, the Council Manager and members of the Management Team, Dr. Omotayo Babatunde, Director of Citizen Engagement; Dr. Ahmad Bello Amina, Director of Medical Services and Disease Control, Lagos State Health District 5; Mrs. Olushola Adenariwo, Director of Community Health Services, Lagos State Health District 5; and Mrs. Olatokunbo Dawodu, Director of Public Affairs, Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement.
