Ojo Local Government on Saturday hosted the 148th Edition of the Ibile Divisional Boxing Championship (Badagry Division), providing a platform for emerging boxing talents from across the division to showcase their skills in a thrilling display of strength, discipline, and sportsmanship.
The championship, organised by the Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame (LBHF) in conjunction with the Lagos State Amateur Boxing Association (LSABA), took place at the Ojo Local Government Secretariat and attracted athletes representing Ojo Local Government, Ifelodun LCDA, Iba LCDA, Olorunda LCDA, Otto-Awori LCDA, Badagry Local Government, Badagry West LCDA, Ajeromi LCDA, Amuwo-Odofin LCDA, Apapa-Iganmu LCDA, as well as selected schools and sports foundations.
The Executive Chairman of Ojo Local Government, Hon. (Princess) Muhibat Titilola Rufai, was present at the championship alongside other distinguished guests to witness the exciting contests and encourage the participating athletes.
The tournament featured ten bouts across various weight categories, including male, female, and exhibition contests. Spectators were treated to impressive performances as the boxers demonstrated determination, technical ability, and sportsmanship throughout the competition.
Among the winners were Abijuwon Farouk of Ifelodun LCDA (Male 50kg), Kareem Yusuf of Iba LCDA (Male 55kg), Fasasi Faezol of Iba LCDA (Male 65kg), Kareem Shukurat of Ojo Local Government (Female 55kg), Alabi Olamilekan of Ojo Local Government (Male 70kg), Lasisi Nurat of Otto-Awori LCDA (Female 51kg), Koku Johnson of Badagry West LCDA (Male 75kg), and Adekunle Habeeb of Iba LCDA (Male 85kg).
The female exhibition bout between Yakub Mariam of Goal Setter Foundation and Aremu Amirat of Samog Primary School, as well as the male exhibition contest between Adebayo Quadri of Apapa Senior High School and Saheed Damilare of Sabo Oniba Primary School, Ojo LCDA, ended with both contestants receiving recognition for their outstanding performances.
In recognition of exceptional performance, Alabi Olamilekan, representing Ojo Local Government, emerged as the Best Boxer of the Championship, earning accolades for his remarkable display throughout the tournament.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of medals and certificates to outstanding athletes by distinguished sports administrators and invited dignitaries, including the Deputy Director of the Lagos State Sports Commission and Head of Sports, Mr. Daramola Nelson; Chairman of Lagos State Boxing Coaches, Mr. Adekunle Fasesun; Board Member of the Nigeria Boxing Federation, Mrs. Iyabo; and Director of Sports, Lagos State, Mr. Olumide Lulahun.
The successful hosting of the championship further reinforces Ojo Local Government’s commitment to promoting grassroots sports development, discovering young talents, and creating opportunities for youths to excel in competitive sports.
